A little late in viewing the post-asia-trekking entries, but, now I really understand parents' desires to live vicariously through their kids.

Nevertheless, my initial reaction to the first two photos of Melbourne was "That looks like Canal St.!" Yes, with an exclamation point. I think it is the overhead trolley lines down the middle of the neutral ground, wide sidewalks and the mix of the older ornate store fronts cheek by jowl with more modern glass fronted ones. Whatever, I think Australia looks to be the best blend of wilderness and civilization.

Post more stuff.

Love to both of you, K

Happy Birthday brother. Don't know if you'll get my other email, so I thought I'd post it here. Even though its the 29th in Australia, you were born EST here, so it doesnt really count. Cheers to you and Megan. Stay healthy. Catch some waves!

Thank you, Megan and JB, for posting this wonderful update! People keep telling me about the drought in Victoria, but it doesn't seem to have hit the Tilba area...how lush it looks. Brilliant addition to have the bird sounds! I feel privileged to have the St Kilda apt photos posted in my honor :*) Very cute...lots of "Megan touches" all through the rooms. My favorite photo, though, is the close-up of my beautiful daughter (awwww:*) and her gorgeous long hair. I'm sure I'm not alone in counting the days til we see you this summer. Love you xo Mum

Hey, I recognize this place! Awesome photos, as usual. I'm glad you've decided to keep the blog going, even though you may feel as though you're 'home'....Sounds as though you're becoming quite the Aussie, JB! The surf and cricket will do that to you. Just keep him away from the horses, Megan :&)

Hey guys,

I'm soooo jealous of where you're at right now and know exactly the places you are talking about. It's really awesome to see how happy you both are and it's been a trip in itself following your adventures. Mae and I are looking at getting out of here in a couple months ourselves and I can't wait to follow in some of your footsteps! Have fun.

Great to keep hearing your news. Even though we're having 60 degree weather here in Indianapolis, your greenery beats it all to pieces...and you have hammocks and swings to top it all off! Enjoy xox Mum

Actually, I think you look like Maynard on Dobie Gillis. Keep the facial hair, it makes life simpler.

My main emotion when viewing your blog is envy.

The photography is spectacular, but then you have a lot to work with. The commentary is informative, articulate, witty and thoroughly enjoyable. It will stand without the pictures. I think you've found your calling--travel writers. Read Simon Winchester.

JB, I'm envious of you swinging in that hammock! I'm sorry you've been sick, though. Stay well and enjoy the rest of your time in SE Asia during the next 2 weeks. Australia will seem like an extended holiday. I just returned to Kalamazoo after 3 days of project management training in the windy city of Chicago. Lisa said we had 8 inches of snow on Monday...prompting the neighbors to scatter their kindnesses: Chris shoveled the driveway, Lisa saw to it that Fudge was inside as much as possible, and Tim and Tory walked Fudge. Miss you guys...thanks for keeping everyone so well informed of your adventures. Kisses xoxo Mum

Hope you don't mind, but your blog along with photos has been projected onto my screen at school for the grade eight drama class to see....they love you both now...lied and said you were married so kids wouldn't go home and tell stories about what they are learning at school. Just wanted kids to know that there is a world beyond where they live. They ask daily about you:) This has been great and I am jealous. ps....those drinks look good!

I must have checked the blog just before you guys posted these last 2-3 messages. It's been a busy few days around here! I also wanted to wish you a happy thanksgiving. Last year JB cooked a magnificent bird in the Cambridge apt, accompanied by several of Megan's creations. We had 10 around our table this year, and the next day we said goodbye to Justin (off to Australia) and Ian (off to Boston). Dane's now back in Ann Arbor, so it's quiet here. We all missed you but know you're having the time of your lives. Love xo Mum

Shaving requires new razors, cologne attracts bugs, deodorant is a luxury, i brush my teeth, my toenails ward off rabid animals, and I haven't seen a qtip in months. Practicalities, Patrick.
In twenty years if im looking back, ill either still have the shaggy look, or wish i could still pull it off.

Happy Thanksgiving!

John Neil, just so you know - the pictures are beautiful, but when you look back twenty years from now, do you really want every picture to be of you with a Scooby-do/Shaggy mustache?

I didnt think so. Clean yourself up: shave, comb your hair, put on some cologne, maybe some deoderant, brush your teeth, floss, cut your toe-nails, and clean your ears with a q-tip. Just so you know, Ive had too much to drink tonight, but, irregardless (which is not a word), have fun, and stay safe.

You guys must be exhausted! This trip demands so much courage, just in knowing how to catch a bus! As usual, the photos are astonishingly beautiful and your stories, of another world. Be prepared to enter a draught-stricken Australia...from what I hear, it's the worst in 100 years.... So Megan, did you get to visit any familiar territory in Hanoi? Love you to bits xo Mum

I decided to take a wee break from this course design work and sneak another look at these photos (don't tell...). Those temples and waterfalls...just awesome. It struck me how strikingly different it must feel to you, after living in the hustle bustle of Boston for years. The serenity could become addictive, no? Then again, you have the beeping, shouting, blaring crowds in those cities, so maybe it evens out. Hey, remember my story about Yugoslavia? Your photos of the impromptu party reminded me of that long ago gathering. Hmmm. I wonder if Hanoi will seem any different to you, Megan. I'll come back to this again tomorrow...hope you're still safe and well, eating good food, meeting good people, and breathing good air. Love xo Mum

Omigosh! I just logged on to your blog on the off-chance that you'd had a chance to update us, and I've been gawking at these spectacular, astonishing photos. I also called a few co-workers to my desk so they could see where you guys are. Now I know what I'll be doing for the next half hour or so...reading your posts and drooling over the scenery. I'll post again when I've had a chance to let this sink in. xo Love you to bits xo Mum

If this were not a public forum, I would have some choice remarks for this picture. Glad to see you are well. Pictures are amazing. I am now truly, truly jealous. Stay safe. And don't forget to get me something cool - like a dragon's tooth, or one of those orange buddhist monk robes. I'm serious.

For those out there that check this everyday, as I do, I just want to let you know that JN and Megan are well.

I called JN last night; although I did not speak with him, he text-messaged me this morning, informing me that they will be arriving in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, tomorrow.

As an aside, JN and Megan, if you guys say you are going to post in three days, you better do so, or we over in the States begin to worry.

As always, Tin and I are thinking of you guys: stay safe and healthy.

And post some more pictures!

Hey there (from tory)! Sounds like an amazing trip so far. Having been born during the V War, I'm really intrigued w/ that part of American history, but also sort of horrified by it. Do you feel/see remnants of it anywhere? Winter is approaching, Jasper is doing well, was a baby bat for Halloween.

It sure seems like you've been gone longer than three weeks....you've done so much already. I keep giving people your blog address - hope you don't mind. That travelfish link was pretty interesting. Great ideas! Glad to hear your cave story had a happy ending. The photos are amazing. Reading about your travels is so refreshing - a nice change from the mid-term election news, Halloween shenanigans, NPR fund drives....I hope you continue to have great weather. Love you guys xo Mum

I for one am glad you all didn't do the motorbike, knowing that your expertise lies in other areas, and motor bikes is not one of them. Please be careful and safe as you enter Laos and keep in touch so we all dont have to worry. Also, keep the pictures coming, it is so much fun to live thru the camera a little bit of the experience that you all are having. We can't wait till the next post and pictures.

Princes - we have a role for a witch. will you take it? it doesn't pay well - 1 punch in the face if you forget your lines, a punch in the face even if you do remember your lines, two for flinching, that sort of thing.

I suggest that jnu sticks with his addiction to computers and leave the driving of mopeds to others. It is alot healthier. The pictures are awesome. keep them coming. Also provided they have a 4 star hotel somewhere between the thatched huts I will join you if you decide to stay.

Be careful and dont drink the water

Awesome photos....nice writing Meg...
Reilly got your card from Hong Kong today and has you plotted on the map...she definitely appreciates them.

JN has a bit of a history on mopeds from other trips....just be sure that he keeps his eyes open when he drives..

Stay safe...

Stunning! Audacious! Brilliant! ...and those are descriptions of you 2...not to mention the photos of your paradise. Sure makes Indy look like the prairie that it is. No matter. Just get the address and we'll all meet you there :*) It's a busy Friday here, and I'll be making homemade spinach (yes, spinach) and cheese ravioli for Tim's parents, visiting from Scotland. We'll be talking about you...with love xo MumMom

John-Neil and Meg,

Are you guys reading these comments? I cant tell. If so, aside from the question I just asked, I have another: why is there a perfectly square moat surrounding the central part of Chang Mai? As a follow up, where does the water feed in from, and what is its origin or history? Thanks for the updates. Cheers,

Hi to JB and her worship.

Guess what? I'm hungry. I mean jealous. Well, maybe jealous of people who aren't hungry. Or, just jealous of you two seeing all that stuff.

I can't divulge my true identity because I am working undercover as a food additive taster and last time I told someone my name Wendy's downgraded the meat in their chili to the innards of the rare native flying dung beatle larvae and sales went down slightly for the quarter.

Your trip sounds fantastic - it must be sweet to be taller than anyone. I would recommend getting lost again and not having a map and just wandering around - that seems like the ultimate in travelling (and opposite to life back in workland) - foreign language, foreign food, foreign streets, no responsibilities (except throwing up 3 fingers - for Rich & Rare Whiskey (it's aged 3 years)), no schedule, no clues, nothing to do but go where the smells and the colors and the sounds take you...is somebody cutting onions in here? Oh, it's me - onion sandwhiches for dinner. It can't be champagne and bon-bons every night.

I kept seeing the word 'baht' repeated in the aforementioned blogs - uh, I think the correct term is brat? And, yes, you may give her a knuckle head if it makes you feel better. Besides, this is the cornerstone of Buddhism - "Making others feel bad, to make yourself feel good". And, if that doesn't help, challenge her to a good game of 'chicken' on the mopeds. (The secret is, even if you pull away first, try to be sure you're driving right in front of a stall that sells a lot of marbles, they will make her tires spin too much).

Samir, myself (whoever i may be) and Mikey (he of the successful 'Mikey's Summer Side Dish' fame) are in pre-production of our latest motion picture. We are yet to come up with a working title, but 'bobbing for hot dogs' is a leading contender. It is a rags to riches story of broke-ass son (mikey) overcomes domineering dad to become junior ping-pong champion of the world, but only after he battles it out with his arch nemesis (sey-more) in some heated scenes, and also after his nemesis is found out to be a drug cheat (a made up drug or other performance enhancer that we are yet to come up with yet, but it gives him some special power) and has been having secret meetings with his black market agent (dane).

it's going to ge a box office smash.

ok, well, take it easy, look both ways when you cross the road, don't eat anything that looks or smells like a rat or other rodent, and keep the photos coming! great idea to do the blog.

peace and love

This is soooo cool. I really wish I were there.
I don't have any advice except eat where the locals eat, luxuriate in your hot shower and western plumbing and count your blessings.
TM will be back in China on the 22nd I think. He'll be in touch.
Mother and Dad are fine. I'm going to get the d-- computer. They can't miss this.
Love, kfm

Your website for the trip is awesome- truely amazing.Being in Bangkok for only 3 days, it is difficult to get a taste of a city comprised of over 10 million and a culture dating centuries. Do not be too quick to judge the people or the bustle of the city itself.Give Bangkok another go if you have the time- it is cultured, tolerant and spiritual; and amassed with wonderful food! Enjoy the up countryside where so many of the city dwellers originate.Be safe and take care of each other- AC
